Bibles and Bible Study Programs

e-Sword: This is comparable to QuickVerse ($299), PC Study Bible ($399), and Bible Explorer ($299) bible study programs.  The basic e-Sword program, which comes with just a few resources, allows you to view several Bible versions, view several tools, search for words and phrases, or take study notes.  You can add many "add-on" resources such as commentaries, lexicons, devotions, and dictionaries. (This program is for PC or compatible computers.)

Instructions: First, you will need to install the basic e-Sword program.  To do so, go to http://www.e-sword.net/downloads.html. Chose "e-Sword v7.0.5 application installation", rather than the update, since the update requires a previous version of the e-Sword program.  Once you have downloaded the setup file "setup705.exe," run it to install the basic application.  You may now download as many Bibles, commentaries, dictionaries, or other resources as you wish.  You must save/copy these downloaded files to the "Program File/e-sword/" directory on your hard disk before installing them.  Once they saved/copied the files, simply run them and they will install the resources in e-Sword automatically.

WEB (World English Bible): This is a public domain (GNU) Bible, which means it is not copyrighted and can be distributed by anyone so long as it is not modified.  It was created by updating the language of the American Standard Version.  Available in several different formats, you may use this Bible in publications, print your own copies, or post it on your website.  The instructions below are for getting your won HTML WEB to use on your computer or to post on a website.

Instructions: Go to http://worldenglishbible.org/ and click on the link "Download webhtm.zip containing HTML Bible text."  This is a zip file that contains the entire Bible and the index page.  Use FreeZip available from http://www.ozemail.com.au/~nulifetv/freezip/ if you don't have a zip utility.  Unzip this file to a new folder in your hard drive and use it from there or copy the unzipped files to a directory on your website to make it available to the users of your site.  The instructions in the zip file will tell you how to set up scripture links on your site.

Office Programs

OpenOffice: This office suite can do just about everything MicroSoft Office ($399) can do.  It contains programs equivalent to Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, Draw, and Frontpage.  The OpenOffice suite, created as an open source project based on code from Sun Microsystem's StarOffice, opperates using XML, but can open and save most MicroSoft file formats.

Instructions:  You can download and install OpenOffice on most Windows and Linux (including Mac OS X) computers.  To do so, go to http://download.openoffice.org/1.1.0/index.html.  Read as much as the documentation as you wish on this site.  When you are ready to download, look to the blue box on the bottom left of the page.  Select your language, operating system, and preferred download site.  When you make your last selection, the download should start automatically.  The file you will download will be a Zip file.  Use FreeZip available from http://www.ozemail.com.au/~nulifetv/freezip/ if you don't have a zip utility.  Once unzipped, you should have a directory called "install."  Within the directory is "setup.exe."  Running this file will install OpenOffice on your computer. (Process may vary for operating systems other than Windows so see documentation on website.)

Graphic Design/Art Software

GIMP: Gimp stands for (GNU Image Manipulation Program).  It was created through a open source project and is used by amateur and professional graphic artists around the world.  It has similar abilities as Adobe Photoshop ($649) and plug-ins can be added to increase its capabilities.

Instructions: You will need two files to install GIMP on your computer.   Go to http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/gimp/stable.html and download the "GTK+ 1.3 runtime environment" and "The Gimp for Windows" from one of the sites listed.  Once these files are downloaded, the will need to be unzipped.  Do so with your Zip utility of get FreeZip available from http://www.ozemail.com.au/~nulifetv/freezip/ if you don't have a zip utility.  Install the unzipped GTK+ file first, then the GIMP file.  See www.gimp.org for more information and sources for more plug-ins.

Maya Personal Learning Edition: Maya is the world standard software platform for 3-D graphics.  Most professional game designers, animators, and special effects people use or are trained in Maya.  It was even used for the ground-breaking animation film "Final Fantasy."  A copy of Maya will set you back  $1999 for the basic software and $6999 for the whole shebang.  The great thing is Alias offers an educational version of Maya for free so long as it is not used for commercial purposes.  (Be aware, you have to have a pretty nice computer to use it.)

Instructions: Go to http://www.alias.com/eng/products-services/maya/maya_ple/index.shtml and click "System Reguirements" to see if you've got the hardware it takes to use this program. (Hint: if your using Windows XP, you can find out your system's specs by clicking "Start" then "Control Panel" and then "System".  When the "system window appears, click the "General" tab if it is not automatically displayed.)  If you've got what it takes click your browser's back button and scroll down to "Free download available now."  You can either register or go straight to download.  Either way you will have to supply a valid e-mail address where you can receive your key code to unlock the product.  The file is over 130 MB in size so your download might take a while.  It's a Zip file so use your Zip utility or get FreeZip available from http://www.ozemail.com.au/~nulifetv/freezip/ if you don't have a zip utility.  Once the file is unzipped, run "Install_MayaPLE5_English.exe."  You will be required to supply the key code e-mailed to you before download.  The installer may also ask you to download and install a better QuickTime Player.

Anti-Virus & Security Software

Zonealarm: The basic version of this software is free.  It sets up a virtual firewall to protect your computer from online attacks from hackers and viruses.  This is not an anti-virus software, but it may help you keep from getting a virus from the Internet.  Since more current Windows verisons have their own firewall protection, we do not recommend using it on Computers with XP or 2000 Professional.  You can get the free file from http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?lid=zadb_zadown.

AVG Anti-Virus: This is a basic antivirus program (other, more advanced versions are available but will cost you).  It is fully functional, but has some features that cannot be used until the product is bought.  It is not recommended to use more than one anti-virus program at the same time, so make usre you don't have one before you install this program.  The free version is available at http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php.

Website Design and Administration Software

Mozilla: Mozilla is the open source project browser upon which Netscape Communicator/Navigator is built.  Mozilla contains "Composer," a WYSIWYG (What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get) program for creating web pages.  This tool allows you to create a web page as you would in a desktop publishing program.  It does all the HTML coding for you.  Mozilla's Composer is comparable toMicroSoft Frontpage ($199), although less advanced.

Instructions: Go to http://www.mozilla.org/releases/#1.4.1 and click "Full Installer" under "Win32."  After the file "mozilla-win32-1.4.1-installer.exe" downloads, run it and Mozilla will be installed on your system.  Access Composer by starting Mozilla and click "Composer" in the "Windows" menu at the top.

NoteTab Light: This award winning text editor is perhaps the best tool for those who wish to write HTML code (and other programming languages) by hand.  Some of the coolest features: the ability to have many files open at once, search and replace capabilities, and the ability to apply batch commands to literally thousands of files at once.

Instructions: Go to http://www.notetab.ch/download.htm#ntl and download the NoteTab Light 4.95 zip file from one of the listed sources.  Use FreeZip available from http://www.ozemail.com.au/~nulifetv/freezip/ if you don't have a zip utility.  Your unzip program should make a directory "ntfree."  The file "setup.exe" in this directory will install NoteTab.  Get more "clip libraries" that increase the capabilities of the program from http://www.notetab.ch/libraries.htm.

WS-FTP LE: If you are uploading your site using FTP, this is the tool for you.  This program has two windows: one representing your workstation, and the other presenting your server.  Simply select files and indicate the direction of the transfer.  WS-FTP automatically sends all the necessary commands.

Instructions: Got to http://www.tucows.com/preview/195136.html and select your operating system.  You will download the file "ws_ftple_tuc.exe."  Run the file and the program will be installed on your computer.

pdf995: Create Adobe PDF files for sharing documents with others using this tool.  This works as a printer on your system like Abode Acrobat Distiller which comes with Adobe Acrobat ($299). PDF is a standard file type for government documents, e-books, and many other types of print media.

Instructions:  Go to http://www.pdf995.com/download.html.  You will need two files.  Get the first by clicking "Download" to the right of "Pdf995 Printer Driver" and the second by clicking "Download" to the right of "Free Converter."  The two files downloaded should be "pdf995s.exe" and "ps2pdf995.exe."  Install "pdf995s.exe" first.  To create a PDF file from a open document in a word processor or desktop publisher, go to "File" and select "Print."  Chose the pdf995 printer and click "OK."  You will be prompted to enter a file name and the PDF file will be saved.
